Cybersecurity Skills Needs Analysis in Slovenia
In Slovenia, cybersecurity has become a critical focus, especially following recent cyberattacks on government websites and numerous incidents of personal cyber fraud. These events have raised public awareness about the risks of cyber threats, underscoring the need for robust cybersecurity across all sectors, not only within IT companies. However, Slovenia faces a significant shortage of cybersecurity professionals, leaving most cybersecurity services to specialised IT firms. While a few training providers and universities offer courses in cybersecurity, limited availability makes it challenging to meet both current and future workforce demands.
The Cybersecurity Skills Needs Analysis, conducted by CyberHub Slovenia, examines the current landscape and future requirements for cybersecurity skills and roles. The report identifies key areas of demand, notably for roles such as Cybersecurity Implementer, Incident Responder, Cyber Legal and Compliance Officer, and Cybersecurity Architect, with a particular need for technical expertise. Challenges include a shortage of training programmes, especially for soft and organisational skills, limited educational spots, and low awareness of cybersecurity careers among young people. With a small pool of graduates, companies often upskill IT staff internally to fill roles, and major ICT companies continue to seek skilled professionals.
The report advocates for stronger formal education, certification pathways, and lifelong learning to address skill gaps and adapt to industry needs. Establishing a CyberHub could help bridge this talent gap by promoting the profession, supporting targeted training, and enhancing collaboration between educational institutions and industry, ensuring a steady supply of qualified professionals.
