Cybersecurity competitions in Estonia celebrate 10 years of talent building

2025 marks the 10th anniversary of youth cybersecurity competitions in Estonia – a movement that has engaged tens of thousands of young people in challenges ranging from defending IT systems to conducting attack analysis. Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) has played a key role in organizing these events and fostering the development of future IT professionals.
Over the past decade, competitions such as CyberSpike, CyberDrill, and the international European Cyber Security Challenge (ECSC) have provided 14–25-year-olds with hands-on experience in real-world scenarios – from defending e-services to simulating cyberattacks on critical infrastructure. Even younger students have joined through initiatives like CyberPin and CyberCracker.
According to Birgy Lorenz, head of TalTech’s IT Didactics Centre and initiator of the competitions, Estonian teams have repeatedly earned recognition on international stages. “Team Estonia has taken part in Europe’s largest cybersecurity competition, ECSC, competing against the best from dozens of countries – and proving that our youth are capable of standing among the strongest,” Lorenz noted.
Beyond the thrill of competition, these programs have created pathways into careers. Camps, such as Dream Summer Camp, and talent programs have helped participants deepen their knowledge, connect with employers, and transition into the cybersecurity workforce. Many former winners now work in leading roles across the private and public sector.
The 2025 anniversary highlights not only a decade of achievements but also the need to prepare the next generation for the global cyber challenges ahead. In this context, the competitions are closely connected with international initiatives, such as CyberHubs, which build networks for talent discovery and skills development. Estonia’s model of combining competitions, training, and industry partnerships has become a best practice within CyberHubs, demonstrating how playful yet practical approaches can uncover future cybersecurity leaders.
The celebratory event, “10 Years of Youth Cybersecurity Competitions in Estonia,” took place 1st of October at TalTech, bringing together founders, partners, alumni, and the next generation of cybersecurity talents.
